Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s father Krishna Raj Rai left for heavenly abode at  Mumbai. He breathed last at Mumbai’s Lilavati hospital. He had been admitted to the hospital for over two weeks but his condition worsened on Tuesday night. He had to be shifted to the ICU and put on life support system. His condition has been critical ever since. The actress’ father had undergone a cancer treatment in the past it was being speculated that a possible recurrence must have caused his condition to deteriorate. Earlier in January too, Mr. Rai had been admitted to the hospital as his health had declined. The actor’s father was supposed to be discharged after a two weeks’ stay but his health showed no signs of improvement.

At the time of his admission into the hospital, son-in-law Abhishek Bachchan was in New York, shooting for a film. Aishwarya had been taking care of her father all alone. But Abhishek cancelled his work commitments and rushed in from New York to be by her side. Sources close to the family had earlier confirmed, “Yes, Aishwarya’s dad is in a critical condition and is on the ventilator now. Close family members from all over have rushed to Mumbai to be with the family in these difficult times. We are praying for the best.” Other sources also added that Aishwarya had been constantly keeping tab on her father, even while she was busy with other commitments. On several occasions, dad-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya’s close friend Mickey Contractor were seen visiting her dad at Lilavati.

Krishnaraj Rai, a retired Army biologist, was always known to be a very supportive father. He had always supported whatever his daughters wanted to do. While he never had any problem with Ashwariya choosing to be a model, he was very particular that she should get her professional degree first, before pursuing modelling full time.
