Amar Singh Chamkila trailer review: The makers of ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ dropped the trailer of the film on Thursday. Starring Diljit Dosanjh in the titular role, the film narrates the story of Punjab’s ‘Elvis Presley’ who came from nowhere and became the highest record-selling artist of his time. The Netflix film is directed by Imtiaz Ali and features a musical background with many songs curated and sung by Diljit himself. Parineeti Chopra joins the actor-singer to play Amarjot, Chamkila’s wife.
The two-minute, 37-second trailer gives a glimpse into the life of the singer who became a sensation with his first performance itself, which also led to him discovering his talent. The film follows the story of an underdog – a factory worker who steps on the stage and then never looks back. The trailer promises a wholesome film with humour, drama, emotions and inspiration at its core. ‘Amar Singh Chamkila‘ reflects the very instinct of a common man, who wants to do something big and spends his entire life in search of that one opportunity. The first time he faces the crowd, he is accidentally introduced as ‘Chamkila’. Not in a position to correct the organisers, he goes ahead with the wrong identity, unaware of how the name was going to give him a legendary status in the history of Punjabi music.
The film tries to capture the real-life incidents and moments that made Chamkila the legendary star that he was. It follows his journey of beating poverty and rising to the heights of popularity in the ’80s with the help of the only thing he knew – music. In a scene from the trailer, Diljit says ‘Hum gaane bajane vale hain, humara kaam hai geet gana, hum gayenge‘ – highlighting the essence of the whole film where a man decides to not give up, not surrender but sing, even when the world rejects him, gives him labels and threatens him. The trailer also shows Chamkila’s assassination. The singer was gunned down in Punjab along with his wife when he was just 27. The exact reason behind his murder was never revealed. A section of the audience always believed that Chamkila’s style of singing and the kind of songs he would create boasting coarse lyrics which often comment on masculinity, extra-marital affairs, relationships, male gaze, female body and other topics considered taboo and uncomfortable – led to his killing.
The music of ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ is composed by AR Rahman and the lyrics of the songs are written by Irshad Kamil. The songs ‘Ishq Mitaye’ and ‘Naram Kaalja’ are already topping the chartbusters’ list and several other creations from the film will be out soon. The film features many original tracks curated by Chamkila himself in the ’80s and both Diljit and Parineeti have given their vocals to these renditions.
At the trailer launch of the film in Mumbai, Imtiaz spoke at length about how this is one project which is very close to his heart. He called it special, especially because of the music. Imtiaz said, “Stories of young musicians that challenge the norms of society, who see unprecedented success and then have violent end are unfortunately a worldwide phenomenon. The life and times of Chamkila raised important questions for society but ultimately it is a celebration of the life of an artist, the story of a musician who could never give up his first love – Music. In Netflix, Amar Singh Chamkila found the ideal partner who was both passionate and able to take the film to the most diverse audience.”
The film is produced by Mohit Choudhary, Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films. ‘Amar Singh Chamkila’ premieres on Netflix on April 12. Watch this space for all the latest updates on the film! How did you like the trailer?
