Amazon Channels have introduced a new feature in their already rich service of Amazon Prime Video, called Brown Sugar. The Netflix-style subscription VOD service claiming to offer the “biggest collection of the baddest movies” in the Blaxploitation genre on the internet. Blaxploitation is a term for the exploitation of black people, especially with regard to stereotyped roles in films. And Brown Sugar emerges as an option for those inclined towards this.
Amazon Prime subscribers can now choose from the library of uncensored and commercial free films, as they were originally seen in the theatres. The service will cost $3.99 (~Rs 250) per month and is available to Prime customers with a seven-day free trial, in the United States for
Brown Sugar will boast a collection of almost 300 films of the genre. The likes of “Shaft,” “Dolemite,” “Cotton Comes to Harlem,” “Foxy Brown,” “The Original Gangstas,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Blacula,” “Cleopatra Jones,” “Crash,” “Cooley High,” “Which Way Is Up?”, “Hammer,” and “Black Caesar,” as well as “Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip” and “Car Wash” are all included.
Along with this Brown Sugar will also offer complete seasons of Bounce network series “Saints & Sinners,” “Mann & Wife,” “Family Time,” “In The Cut” and “Ed Gordon,” as well as Premier Boxing Champions events. Brown Sugar was, in fact, launched last year by a multicast African-American television network, Bounce TV. The SVOD service is now available on Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Amazon Kindle, Android and Apple smartphones and tablets, and web browsers via brownsugar.com. It also provides support for Google Chromecast with compatible connected-TV devices in the United States. There is no news of its inclusion in India as of yet.
