Mumbai, Oct 29: Actor Anupam Kher created buzz all over social media through his scathing remarks against the dozen of filmmakers who returned their national awards citing the rise of fringe elements in the nation. Kher, known for his right-wing leanings slammed the dissent shown by the members of film fraternity alleging them of being part of a greater conspiracy against the current government led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“Some more usual suspects who never wanted Narendra Modi to become Prime Minister in the first place have joined the ‘Award Wapsi’ gang,” Kher said on Twitter. In a follow up tweet on the micro-blogging site, he added, “This ‘Award Wapsi gang’ has not insulted the government, but the jury, the chairman of the Jury and the audience who watched their films.” (ALSO READ: FTII row: Dibakar Banerjee, Anand Patwardhan & 8 other directors return their national awards as form of protest)

Anupam Kher also accused the dissident filmmakers of being responsible for removing him from censor board. “The same ‘Award Wapsi gang’ was behind removing me from the censor board when Congress came to power,” he said. Interestingly, the revered actor’s wife Kirron Kher is a parliamentarian on BJP ticket. Recently, he also lambasted the Sahitya Akademi writers for returning their honours back to the government due to the spree of attacks on rationalists and the subsequent inaction adopted. Anupam Kher questioned their silence when Narendra Dabholkar was assassinated during the tenure of Congress.
