Talk about veteran actors who are immensely talented and have struck a chord with the audience with their varied roles and Anupam Kher is one of the first names that come to mind. That must also have been the case for producer Sunil Bohra, when he was looking for an actor to play the part of Manmohan Singh. Producer Sunil Bohra has taken up a project to make a film on the life of India’s financial expert and ex Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The film will be an adaptation of Sanjaya Baru’s The Accidental Prime Minister: The making and unmaking of Manmohan Singh.
Sanjaya Baru’s book, The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh, was critical of the former PM, coinciding with the parliamentary polls in 2014. The book focuses on the shortcomings of the former PM, who succumbed under the influence of Sonia Gandhi, resulting in tumultous politics.
Bohra who’s produced movies like Shahid, Gangs of Wasseypur, and Tanu Weds Manu, was quoted by the Economic Times saying that the film will be a political drama “grander” than even Richard Attenborough’s Academy award winning Gandhi, which was a legendary hit. Speaking about his role in the film, Anupam Kher told Economic Times, “Acting the role of anyone in contemporary history is extremely challenging, as comparisons are bound to be instant and inevitable. But I have always reveled in challenges, right from my first film, Saaransh. I look forward to the experience of portraying PM Manmohan Singh.”
Anupam Kher who’s been active in the poltics of the nation, is also a devout BJP supporter, who is also known to take swipes at Manmohan Singh himself.
The screenplay of the movie has been readied by the director of Shahid, City Lights, and Aligarh – Hansal Mehta. And it will be the directorial debut film for Vijay Ratnakar Gutte.
The film is set to hit screens in December 2018, ahead of the next general election in 2019. The first look will be unveiled on Wednesday, 8th June 2017.
