Bollywood star Ranveer Singh, who is all set to appear in his upcoming film Dhurandhar, is facing serious backlash. A complaint has been lodged against him at the High Grounds Police Station in Bengaluru for allegedly mocking a sacred ritual from the film Kantara: A Legend- Chapter 1.
The incident took place on November 28 during the closing ceremony of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. While paying tribute to Kantara’s lead actor-director, Ranveer Singh claimed he watched the film in theatres and was deeply impressed by the “female ghost entering a body” scene, in reference to the Daiva ritual. Then, reportedly, he performed an imitation of that scene on stage with exaggerated expressions. In his act, he referred to the sacred Daiva as a “female ghost,” a phrase that sparked outrage, especially among the Tulu-speaking community and followers of regional traditions.
The complaint was filed by a Bengaluru-based advocate, naming the actor under sections of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS), specifically sections 299, 302 and 196. The allegation: that Ranveer’s mimicry and remarks amounted to hurting religious sentiments of “millions of Hindus, particularly the Tulu-speaking community of Karnataka.” The complainant argued that calling a revered deity a “ghost” and acting out sacred rituals in a mock style was deeply offensive and unacceptable.
As soon as the video of Ranveer’s stage act went viral, social media erupted with criticism. Many viewers said the performance was insensitive and disrespectful to a culture and faith they hold dear. Comments poured in, calling for boycotts of Dhurandhar and denouncing the mimicry as offensive.
Interestingly, reports say that the original actor-director of Kantara, Rishab Shetty, had allegedly requested Ranveer not to mimic the Daiva ritual before he went on stage. Despite that, Ranveer chose to perform the act, a detail that has deepened the outrage.
Meanwhile, in response to the backlash, Ranveer issued a public apology on his Instagram Story. He said his only intention was to “highlight Rishab’s incredible performance” and that, as an actor, he respected every culture, tradition and belief. He expressed regret if his imitation hurt anyone’s sentiments.
His apology came just a day before the police complaint was filed. While some accepted that he may not have meant offense, others felt the act was too insensitive to pass off as mere tribute.
