The government may take control of the ancestral property of the Pataudi family worth Rs 15,000 crore. The High Court has lifted the stay on the property which is now considered ‘enemy property’ because the Nawab’s eldest daughter moved to Pakistan. Descendants of the Nawab family including Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore are claiming ownership of this property. The government will now survey the property and could take possession of it through legal proceedings. Earlier, in 2015, the government had declared this property as government-owned. Scroll down to find more details.
The Nawab family’s Rs 15,000 crore worth of property including assets in Bhopal might now be under the government’s control. The Madhya Pradesh High Court (Jabalpur) has lifted the stay that had been imposed on this property since 2015. This case is related to the ‘Enemy Property Act’. Justice Vivek Agrawal’s single bench gave the Nawab family 30 days to present their case before the appellate authority. The deadline has now passed and the family has not made any claims yet.
At this point the Saif Ali Khan’s family has only one option left: to challenge the High Court’s ruling in the Division Bench. With the stay lifted the government can now take possession of the Nawab family’s property under the ‘Enemy Property Act’. Preparations for this are already underway. Bhopal Collector Kaushalendra Vikram Singh informed the media that an investigation would be conducted to determine who owned the enemy properties in the last 72 years. After the High Court’s order, a survey of the property will also be carried out.
The Nawab family’s Rs 15,000 crore worth assets include the Pataudi Palace in Gurgaon, Noor-us-Sabah Palace in Bhopal, Flag Staff House, Dar-us-Salam, Bangla off Habibi, Cottage 9, Four Quarters, Motors Garage, Workshop, New Colony Quarters, Bangla No. 1 New Colony, Dairy Farm Quarters, Faras Khana, Forest Store, Police Guard Room, Government Dispensary, Government School, Kohefiza Property, and Ahmedabad Palace among many other land holdings and buildings.
The central government clarified in 2015 that the rightful heir to Nawab Hamidullah Khan’s property was his eldest daughter, Abida, who moved to Pakistan. Therefore, this property falls under the ‘Enemy Property Act’. However, the descendants of the Nawab’s second daughter, Sajida Sultan, including Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore, are claiming ownership of this property.
