Amid the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh, where there have been multiple reports of targeted Hindus and minorities being murdered and houses being set on fire, Rahul Ananda, a Hindu musician in Dhaka, is known to have been the victim of a violent attack on his home. He is a musician, songwriter, and vocalist who leads the well-known folk group Joler Gaan in Dhaka.

Reports state that while Mr Ananda, his wife, and their kid were able to flee the attack unscathed, the assailants took whatever valuables they could from the artist’s home. The residence was demolished by the mob, who also took valuables, including Ananda’s vast collection of more than 3,000 handcrafted musical instruments.

According to a close family member of Rahul Ananda who spoke with The Daily Star, a daily newspaper published in English in Bangladesh, the assailants smashed down the gate before starting to destroy the residence. A source close to the family told the newspaper, “They took everything from furniture and mirrors to valuables. After that, they torched the whole house along with Rahul da’s musical instruments.”

Several other musicians and artists have reported that Rahul Ananda, his wife Urmila Shukla, and his son Tota were able to get out amid the violent onslaught safely. The artist and his family are now psychologically destroyed, despite not having suffered any physical injuries, as per United News of Bangladesh.

Performers, musicians, and his admirers/fans went to social media to express their deep sorrow at the unfathomable death of the cherished artist and his family. Many have also questioned why the event occurred in spite of the musician’s and his band’s statements of support for the student movement’s fight against the tyranny of the previous administration.

In Bangladesh, attacks on minority groups, particularly Hindus, have escalated a day after the prime minister was ousted due to widespread demonstrations against a contentious job quota in government jobs.
