Actress Shubhangi Atre made her debut as the new Angoori Bhabhi on popular comedy show Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! in a fresh episode on Monday, April 25. Viewers had been teased by &TV with the promo of the episode, with only a glimpse of the new Angoori Bhabhi, without showing her face. As the fresh episode began on Monday, Shubhangi Atre’s face eluded the viewers for some time, with her back being shown. The mystery added to the aura of the much-loved character of Angoori Bhabhi (made popular by Shilpa Shinde), an innocent and pretty village belle married into the city who does not understand the flirtatious ways of her neighbour Vibhuti (Asif Sheikh). Neither does she understand that her husband Manmohan (Rohitash Gaud) fancies Vibhu’s wife, another pretty Bhabhiji Anita (Saumya Tandon).
After the entire brouhaha over Shilpa Shinde being ousted out of the show, the makers didn’t know what to do with the character of Angoori Bhabhi that made Shilpa so famous. It was a tough task to find a good replacement for her. On Monday, even as we watched with bated breath to see how Shubhangi Atre performed as Angoori Bhabhi, the hangover of Shilpa Shinde remained. It seems Shilpa will be be missed for a few episodes of Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! before the show’s fans get used to Shubhangi. But for now, ‘the show goes on’, as they say.
The new Angoori Bhabhi made a dramatic entry, singing the Lata Mangeshkar song Bhor Bhaye Panghat Pe from Satyam Shivam Sundaram and that made the mystery around Shubhangi Atre very sexy! The new Angoori Bhabhi is skinny and slightly taller and her sarees are a bit different; but Shubhangi has made sure to have the same mannerisms as Shilpa and also amply uses her popular line ‘Sahi pakde hai’ in her debut episode of Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai. She has also made sure not to badmouth her predecessor. In an interview to HT, Shubhangi said about Shilpa, “She is a brilliant actor and a sweet person. She has set a benchmark with this role.”
Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! has moved on from Shilpa Shinde. But for viewers, it will take some more time. Some people are impressed with Shubhangi Atre as the new Angoori Bhabhi, with her correct accent and her beauty, while others are not and even expressed themselves on Twitter. There have been many popular characters on Indian television in the past that have been replaced for some reasons or another, as happens in theatre. So we had multiple Mihir Viranis in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (Amar Upadhyay, Inder Kumar, Ronit Roy), or Anandis on Balika Vadhu (Avika Gor, Pratyusha Banerjee, Toral Rasputra). Since Shilpa Shinde is not coming back to Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai, we think Shubhangi Atre needs to be given time to settle down in her character. We would rate Shubhangi Atre three out of five stars (3/5) for her take as Angoori Bhabhi. Let’s see what new dimensions she can add to the character.
