Period drama Kalank released as the biggest opener of 2019 in India and while the Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan starrer saw a dip on the second day in the country’s theatres, the movie is having a good run internationally. The Abhishek Varman directorial earned lower than expected on its day 2 of release and collected only Rs 11.45 crore, marking a huge dip of around 46.99 per cent in its second-day collection. However, the movie is performing well overseas and has managed to gross around Rs 11.45 crores on the international turf. Sharing the figures on his Twitter handle, film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh revealed, “#Kalank is having a good run in international markets… Wed + Thu total: $ 1.650 mn [₹ 11.45 cr]… Day 1: $ 740k Day 2: $ 910k Key markets… USA+Canada: $ 516k UK: £ 257k UAE+GCC: $ 395k Australia: A$ 244k” (sic). Adarsh also revealed that the Abhishek Varman-directorial has registered the third biggest decline in its day 2 collection. Only Kesari and Gully Boy are above the film on the list. He wrote, “Day 2 decline… 2019 releases… #Kesari [Thu release] Decline on Day 2: 20.47% #GullyBoy [Thu release] Decline on Day 2: 32.47% #Kalank [Wed release] Decline on Day 2: 46.99% Note: Day 2 was working day in all three cases.” (sic)

The huge decline in the second-day collection of any film means two things – either the film hasn’t received good word-of-mouth and that has affected its performance at the Box Office or the second day is a working day and the weekend can prove to be more fruitful for the film in general sense. In the case of Kalank, both the factors are true. The film saw a Wednesday release which makes the second day a working day – Thursday, and it also received bad word-of-mouth with people even sharing funny memes on social media after its release. The first-weekend collection should give more clarity on its performance at the Box Office.

The film has an ensemble cast of Madhuri Dixit Nene, Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Sonakshi Sinha, and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Directed by Abhishek Varman, produced by Karan Johar, Sajid Nadiadwala, Hiroo Yash Johar, and Apoorva Mehta, and co-produced by Fox star studios, the film released on Wednesday, April 17.
