The recent Pulwama terror attack brought out a strong reaction from people from all walks of life, with even Bollywood stars taking to their social media pages to condemn the act. The attack, which was carried out by a member of the terror group Jaish-e-Mohammed, had killed 49 jawans of the CRPF and left many injured. There were calls for action to be taken against the terror group which is in Pakistan. Following the attack and outcry, stars decided to boycott events in Karachi. One such star couple was Shabana Azmi and lyricist Javed Akhtar, who turned down an invitation by the Karachi Arts Council following the attack. The move was seen as the two standing in solidarity with India and the men who were martyred, however, it did not sit well with actress Kangana Ranaut, who called Shabana ‘anti-national’ for accepting an invite from Pakistan. Pinkvilla reported that during an interaction with the Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi actress, she said, “People like Shabana Aazmi calling for halt on cultural exchange, they are the ones who promote Bharat tere Tukade honge gangs…. why did they organise an event in Karachi in the first place when Pakistani artists have been banned after Uri attacks and now they are trying to save face. Film industry is full of such anti-nationals who boost enemies morals in many ways but right now is the time to focus on decisive actions…. Shabana had earlier tweeted on the attack and clearly stated that there can in no way be a cultural exchange between India and Pakistan.
A report in In.com had revealed that when Shabana was asked for a response to Kangana’s statement, she had simply said, “You really think at a time like this a personal attack on me can be of any significance when the entire country stands as one in our grief and in condemning this dastardly Pulwama attack? May God bless her.”
Shabana and Javed had been invited to the event as it was being held to celebrate the work of Shabana’s father poet Kaifi Azmi.
