The #MeToo movement in India has seen a good number of stories coming out with high profile celebrities being accused of sexual harassment and abuse. While they have been named and shamed, some have escaped punishment altogether. Actor Alok Nath, who had been accused by screenwriter and director Vinta Nanda of rape, is, as per the police, missing from the investigation. According to Mid-Day, a source at Oshiwara police station revealed that Alok is untraceable, and that there was no one at his house to accept the summons letter issued to him last week. “His [Nath’s] version is equally important in the case. Last week, we had issued summons to him so that the next level of investigation in the Vinta Nanda case can be initiated but he was not at home. We don’t know where he is!” the source said. Alok’s legal counsel Ashok Saraogi told Mid-Day that the veteran actor had gone out of town for some important work.
“The summons was issued but was not served as Nath is not in Mumbai. He will return to the city this week and will definitely visit Oshiwara police station. He is in touch with me,” said Ashok. He added, “I have not read the contents of the summons.”
Vinta had in October written a lengthy note on her Facebook page, detailing the gruesome experience she had gone through at the hands of Alok while she was working on the television serial Tara.
After her revelation, Vinta had filed a police complaint on November 21 against Alok and he was booked for rape. Alok on the other hand denied the allegations and filed a defamation case against her.
For the case to move forward, Vinta was told she had to undergo medical test to verify the crime took place. Now Alok’s arrest hinges on Vinta’s medical report and the statement she made in the FIR.
