Self-taught director Rima Das’ who hails from Assam’s Chaygaon, gave India a beautiful film titled Village Rockstars and now, the film has been selected as Indian’s official entry to Oscar 2019. Films like Raazi, October, Love Sonia, Padmaavat and many more were submitted as nominations. However, Village Rockstars has emerged as the clear winner.

Anant Mahadevan, jury member stated that they are very proud to send this film for the Oscars adding that it is the closest movie made by international standards.

Some countries have already declared their candidates for the category. Capharnaum has been picked by Lebanon whereas Indonesia has selected Marlina the Murder In Four Acts for Oscars 2019.

Village Rockstars narrates the story of a girl, Dhunu (beautiful in Assamese), from a village in Assam, who dreams to own a guitar and forms a rock band. Rima Das’ niece Bhanita played the lead in the movie.

The film won hearts and was praised at various film festivals across the world. It was shot, edited and produced by Rima. The lady made her debut with Man with Binoculars in 2016.

In 2018, Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi starrer Newton was selected for Oscars. However, the movie couldn’t make it to the list of the final nine films. This left many heartbroken and now expectations are high from Village Rockstars.

Rima, who has never been to a film school and is, in fact, a self taught filmmaker got the whole idea of making such a film when she was just strolling in her village and saw a group of boys playing with fake instruments. Impressed with their enthusiasm, Rima decided to make a film with the young boys. One might be surprised to know that all the actors in the film are non-professionals except for one.

The 91st Academy Awards will take place on February 24, 2019.
