Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar has finally come out to speak about his next film – the Udham Singh biopic with actor Vicky Kaushal. The film titled Udham Singh: The Story of a Freedom Fighter is currently being shot in Russia with Vicky playing the lead. In his first interview about the film, Sircar told a news daily that he wanted to make this film ever since he started acting in plays in Delhi. However, back then, he didn’t have resources or money to make it a success and now, with his team of writers, he is more than willing to invest his heart and soul into bringing a person on-screen who’s reverred by many and is considered a hero by a whole Indian community. Also Read - Vicky Kaushal Reveals How he Reacted When he First Heard The Rumours of His Engagement With Katrina Kaif
Sircar revealed to Mumbai Mirror that Vicky was a perfect fit for the role because there’s ‘burning intensity and anger’ in his eyes. The director is also aware that even though Udham Singh is considered as the one whose life sacrifice triggered the non-cooperation movement in India before independence, not many know about his contribution. Sircar said he wants to make this film so that his sacrifice is acknowledged globally. He was quoted by the daily saying, “Many have not even heard his name. But it’s thanks to people like him, that we live in independent India today. What they had to go through for us to enjoy this freedom is shocking and traumatic.” Also Read - Vicky Kaushal Opens Up On Roka Rumors With Katrina Kaif : Says, "I Will Get Engaged Soon Enough", Watch Video
The biopic was initially being done by actor Irrfan Khan. However, after he was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour, he refused to do the film citing he won’t be able to do the action scenes. Sircar revealed that he looks forward to collaborating with Irrfan on some other project soon as his health is the priority. He further gave away that the team of Udham Singh will also be shooting in Germany, parts of Ireland, outskirts of London and in India apart from Russia. Earlier, Vicky expressed his excitement over working in the biopic. He told Pinkvilla that it was a dream come true for him as he is getting to work on a film directed by Shoojit Sircar. He said that everything about the film is beautiful and the director’s vision makes it even more appealing.
It was in April 1919 that the dreadful Jallianwalla Bagh massacre happened as over 1000 people died and more than 1500 got injured after Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer, and Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, Michael O’Dwyer, ordered the British troops to fire at the crowd that had gathered for a peaceful protest against the arrest of two leaders. It was in March 1940 that Udham Singh, after years of planning, shot O’Dwyer dead to seek revenge of the merciless killings of the Jallianwala Bagh. Hailed by Indians as one of the great freedom fighters, he was convicted of murder and hanged to death in July 1940.
