The Accidental Prime Minister Box Office Collection Day 1: Anupam Kher-Akshaye Khanna’s Film Grosses Rs 4.50 Crore

The film hit the screens yesterday amid tight security as Congress activists protested at various parts of the country

Despite the protest staged by Congress activists in some parts of the country, Anupam Kher‘s The Accidental Prime Minister managed to collect Rs 4.50 crore on Day 1. The film, that was initially dismissed by critics as a move of shoddy propaganda, picked momentum yesterday evening onwards.

The film’s presenter, Pen Studios, said in a statement, “The first day collection of ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ is Rs 4.5 crore. Eastern sector had disturbances with the release.”

Sharing the figures on his Twitter handle, film critic and analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#TheAccidentalPrimeMinister picked up from evening shows onwards… Records decent numbers on Day 1… Fri ₹ 4.50 cr. India biz. #TAPM” (sic).

The film is based on a book by Sanjaya Baru with the same title. Sanjay was the former media advisor of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. In the film, Anupam Kher is seen essaying the role of Dr Manmohan Singh while Akshaye Khanna is seen playing the role of Baru. The movie also features actors Suzanne Bernert, Aahana Kumra and Arjun Mathur.

The film hit the screens yesterday amid tight security as Congress activists protested at various parts of the country with the Delhi Youth Wing of the Shiromani Akali Dal even writing to cinema halls urging them not screen the movie as they felt that it defames both Manmohan Singh and the country across the globe. Not only was the film’s screening stopped in a Ludhiana multiplex but also cancelled in a Kolkata theatre following the protest. A senior police officer told IANS, “There was an agitation by a certain group outside the hall.”
