After Mahabharata, Ramayan, Shaktiman, another cult classic Chanakya has joined the list of reruns on Doordarshan amid the nationwide 21-day lockdown. Chanakya, directed by Dr. Chandraprakash Dwivedi, has 47 episodes. It has been planned for daily telecast in the afternoon time band of DD Bharti from the first week of April. Chanakya was originally telecast on DD National from 8 September 1991 to 9 August 1992. It is the fictionalised version of the life-history of an economist, strategist and political theorist Chanakya, who was also the royal advisor of King Chandragupta Maurya. The series is divided into three major parts. The early life of Vishnugupta in the kingdom of Magadha, the invasion of northwestern India by Alexander and the attack on and the overthrow of the Nanda rule in Magadha. PTI’s social media handle shared a tweet stating, “Doordarshan all set to bring back iconic shows like ‘Shaktimaan’ & ‘Chanakya’ during lockdown”.


Earlier, the national broadcaster Doordarshan decided to re-telecast popular shows of that time Circus starring Shah Rukh Khan, and also Byomkesh Bakshi and mythological series Ramayana. 

Soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the 21-day lockdown, many social media users urged Doordarshan to bring back its classic like Ramayan and Mahabharat which worked as magnets for the audience back in the day.

The I&B Ministry and Prasar Bharti came through and announced the re-telecast of classics like Ramayan, Mahabharat and Byomkesh Bakshi on the Doordarshan. Chanakya now becomes the latest marquee addition to make a comeback on the network.

DD National’s social media handle also announced the return of Rajit Kapur-starrer Byomeksh Bakshi.
