Universal Pictures has officially released the much-awaited trailer for Christopher Nolan’s next ambitious project, The Odyssey. The trailer premiered online on Monday, December 22, instantly sparking conversations among film lovers and Nolan loyalists alike. Known for transforming complex ideas into cinematic spectacles, Nolan now tackles one of the oldest and most revered stories ever told, Homer’s epic poem about war, loss, endurance, and the longing for home.

From its very first frames, the trailer makes it clear that this is not a conventional retelling of a mythological tale. Instead, it feels grounded, raw and emotionally charged, staying true to Nolan’s signature style of immersive storytelling.

What does the trailer reveal about Odysseus’ journey?

Matt Damon steps into the role of Odysseus, the legendary Greek hero, trying to find his way back home after the Trojan War. The trailer opens in the aftermath of battle, with Troy in ruins and soldiers visibly scarred by years of bloodshed. Odysseus is seen leading his weary men away from the city, driven by a single goal: to return to their families alive.

As expected, the journey is far from straightforward. The visuals focus on relentless travel and survival, showing Odysseus crossing harsh landscapes, navigating violent seas and enduring repeated shipwrecks. Storms rage, ships break apart,t and exhaustion takes over, underlining how unforgiving the journey truly is.

How does Nolan hint at myth and danger?

One of the most striking moments in the trailer shows Odysseus and his men hidden inside the iconic Trojan Horse, confirming that the fall of Troy will play a key role in the film’s opening chapters. Another eerie sequence features a dark cave where a massive shadow moves in the background — a subtle but effective nod to the monsters and mythical threats Odysseus will face, without revealing them outright.

Nolan keeps the mystery intact, allowing imagination to fill in the gaps.

Where does emotion fit into this epic?

Beyond spectacle, the trailer makes room for intimacy and emotion. Tom Holland appears as Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, while Anne Hathaway is seen as Penelope, the wife waiting endlessly for her husband’s return. Dialogue is sparse, but the longing, hope and quiet despair come through strongly in their expressions.

Who else stars in The Odyssey?

The ensemble cast is nothing short of massive. Alongside Damon, Hathaway and Holland, the film features Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Robert Pattinson, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page, Himesh Patel and Corey Hawkins.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan and produced with longtime collaborator Emma Thomas, The Odyssey is backed by Universal Pictures. Shot entirely using IMAX’s largest film format, it also marks the first feature ever made fully with this advanced technology.

The Odyssey is scheduled to release worldwide on July 17, 2026.
