In the glitzy and glamorous world of showbiz, fame and controversies are a part and parcel of being in the limelight. One such example of this is a Pakistani actress who became one of Pakistan’s highest-paid actresses, earning both appreciation and criticism. She has also received Bollywood offers and even been linked to underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.
Yes, the actress that we are talking about is none other than Mehwish Hayat.
Mehwish Hayat made her acting debut in films in 2015 with Jawani Phir Nahi Aani. Her natural charm and confidence won many hearts. Later, she appeared in many noteworthy films that became massive hits, like Actor in Law (2016), Punjab Nahi Jaungi (2017), Load Wedding (2018), and London Nahi Jaunga (2022). Each film not only broke box-office records but also further cemented her as one of the most bankable female stars in Pakistan’s entertainment industry.
What’s interesting is that Mehwish has not only received love and admiration in Pakistan, but she was reportedly shortlisted for a pivotal role in the Bollywood film Fanney Khan. However, political tensions and a ban on Pakistani artists in India prevented her from debuting in Bollywood. Later, that part was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.
Besides being at the center of the spotlight, Mehwish also found herself in the middle of controversy when she received the prestigious Tamgha-e-Imtiaz from the Pakistani government in 2019. Soon after that, sensational rumours surfaced claiming that underworld don Dawood Ibrahim had influenced her selection. Some reports even alleged that Dawood became infatuated after seeing her dance performance and helped her career flourish. While these rumours were never confirmed, Mehwish also never publicly commented on the matter.
Apart from acting, Mehwish has openly expressed her interest in politics. Once in an interview, she revealed her dream of becoming Pakistan’s Prime Minister, saying, “If a cricketer like Imran Khan can become prime minister, why not an actor?”
