When we say or even think of Mumtaz, the first thing that pops in our mind is her dancing while draped in a stunning orange saree in ‘Aaj Kal Tere Mere Pyaar Ke Charche.’ The actress who started her career at 11 as a child artist, went on to become one of the highest-paid stars of her time and worked with all leading men including Rajesh Khanna, Dilip Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, among others.
Born to an Indian father and Iranian mother in 1947, Mumtaz had her first experience of glamour world when young and became child artist at 11. However, as she turned adult, she grabbed supporting roles in films like Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Rustam Sohrab (1963) and more.
At the age of 15, Mumtaz signed her first film Faulad (1963) opposite Dara Singh. Sharing her experience, the actress stated, “To a certain extent, I can say I owe my career to Dara Singh because after doing films with him, I started getting good offers. I have very high regard for him.”
Later, Mumtaz was type cast into a B-grade heroine. Hence actors at that point refused to share screen space with her. To get rid of the label, she starred wit Dara Singh in many action thrillers including, Veer Bhimsen, Samson, Hercules (all 1964), Tarzan Comes to Delhi, Tarzan and King Kong, Son of Hatimtai, Sikandar-e-Azam, Rustom-e-Hind, Jadui Angoothi and among others. However, things changed for her finally when she worked with Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam, that truly transformed her career. Later her hit pairing with Rajesh Khanna brough her to the top slot.
Mumtaz is considered one of the most beautiful actresses. Her on-screen chemistry with Shammi Kapoor was widely adored by the audiences. Did you know, Shammi Kapoor once proposed to Mumtaz when she was just 17? Yes you heard it right! Mumtaz declined the proposal because she was building her career at that time and didn’t want to marry and settle down. Despite this, Mumtaz revealed that Shammi’s love was truly unparallel and unforgettable.
Mumtaz married businessman Mayur Madhvani in 1974. They have two daughters. Their daughter Natasha has been married to Feroz Khan’s son Fardeen Khan since 2006. She quit films after her marriage and was last seen in Aandhiyan (1990), which was her comeback movie after 13 years.
