Veteran Bollywood actress and BJP MP Hema Malini, wife of the late film icon Dharmendra, recently hosted a prayer meet in Delhi to remember her late husband, who passed away on November 24 at the age of 89 following a brief illness. The prayer meet, which took place at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre on Janpath, New Delhi, was attended by several prominent political figures, along with Hema Malini’s daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol, and her son-in-law, Vaibhav Vohra.
During the prayer meet, Hema Malini took the stage to address the gathering, and her speech left everyone in tears. “Aaj ki is prarthana sabha mein aap sab ka swagat karte hue, main bahut hi bhavuk ho rahi hoon. Maine kabhi nahi socha tha ki meri zindagi mein aisa ek pal aayega, jab mujhe bhi yeh shok sabha rakhni padegi, woh bhi mere Dharam ji ke liye. The whole world is mourning his passing, but for me, it is an inconsolable shock, the breaking of a companionship that stood the test of time,” she said, visibly emotional.
Her voice cracked as she spoke of the bond she shared with Dharmendra, reflecting on their decades-long relationship. She added, “Jis shaks ke sath maine pyaar ka abhinay kiya, wahi mere jeevansathi ban gaye, humara pyaar saccha tha, toh humara kisi bhi paristhithi ka saamna karne ka saahas tha, isliye hum dono ne shaadi ki wo mere liye ek bahut samarpit jeevan sathi bane, wo hamesha mere sath ek majboot stambh bankar khade rahe, meri dono betiyon Esha aur Ahana ke liye ek vaatsalya ke bhare ek pita bane aur unki shaadi karayi.”
Hema Malini also fondly recalled how Dharmendra was a loving grandfather to their five grandchildren. “Hamare 5 grand children, unke liye wo ek bahut pyaare naanu bane, and they were mad about naanu, Dharam ji unhe dekhkar bahut khush ho jate the, chote chote bacchon ko, aur unhe dekhkar wo mujhse yahi kehte the, ki ye humari bahut khubsurat phulwari hai, inhe sambhaal ke rakhna.” Her heartfelt memories of Dharmendra as a devoted father and grandfather revealed just how deeply he was loved by his family, and how important he was in shaping their lives.
This event was especially significant as it came just days after what would have been Dharmendra’s 90th birthday on December 8. The prayer gathering was the second such memorial since his passing, following the one held in Mumbai on November 27, organized by Dharmendra’s eldest son, actor Sunny Deol. That event saw an overwhelming presence of film industry figures like Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and Akshay Kumar, among others. In stark contrast, this gathering was attended primarily by political leaders, such as Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
