The hospital stated that the 89-year-old Dharmendra was admitted due to shortness of breath. He was initially kept in the ICU, but later shifted to a ventilator after his condition worsened.
The hospital stated that when Dharmendra arrived, he was having difficulty breathing, and this is normal as one ages. It should be noted that Hindi cinema’s He-Man, Dharmendra, left his family, his village, and a comfortable life to pursue his dream of becoming an actor.
Born in a small village in Punjab, Dharmendra Singh Deol was passionate about films from childhood. He was married to Prakash Kaur at a very young age, but he had only one dream: to become an actor. One day, Dharmendra saw an advertisement in Filmfare magazine calling for auditions for new faces. This advertisement proved to be the turning point in his life. He convinced his family and left his village and headed straight for the city of dreams, Mumbai.
Dharmendra’s struggle began as soon as he arrived in Mumbai. He had no acquaintances, no place to live, and no money for food. For many days, he lived in small rooms, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone. In an interview, Dharmendra himself revealed that there came a time when he didn’t even have enough money to eat.
Dharmendra said, “I was so hungry that I dissolved an entire packet of psyllium husk in water and drank it. Later, my health deteriorated so much that I had to go to the hospital.”
This was the period when Dharmendra faced the toughest test of his life, but his hard work and dedication paid off. He landed his first film, Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere Mili, and from there began his success story.
Dharmendra has delivered numerous superhit films in his career, including Sholay, Sita Aur Geeta, Chupke Chupke, Sharabi, and Raja Jani. He was considered Hindi cinema’s biggest action hero in the 90s. He remains active in films today, and recently won audiences’ hearts with his performance in “Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.”
While Dharmendra once barely had enough money to live and eat, he now owns assets worth over ₹450 crore (approximately $1.5 billion). He owns a luxurious farmhouse worth ₹100 crore (approximately $1.5 billion), glimpses of which he frequently shares on social media. He also owns several luxury cars, properties in Mumbai and Lonavala, and a resort spread over approximately 12 acres.
During his film career, Dharmendra met his dream girl, Hema Malini. Their pairing was not only a hit on-screen, but they also married and forged a new beginning off-screen. Today, their sons, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, are also well-known Bollywood actors.
