In the ever-evolving world of showbiz, many stars come and go, but there are a few artists who rise, fall, and are remembered through the legacy that they leave behind. One such example of this is Amar Singh Chamkila, who was understood in his lifetime, but today he is celebrated as a cultural phenomenon. Celebrated actor and singer stepped into Chamkila’s shoes for his biopic; however, it wasn’t just a performance but rather an emotional connection that stayed with him even after the camera rolled. Speaking about the same, Diljit revealed that even though Chamkila is no longer here to witness the tribute, his presence, music, and story continue to inspire, and he believes he felt his presence more than once.
Speaking about Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit spoke about how the world rarely recognises greatness while it is still breathing. He said, “Every artist has to face all kinds of difficulties in life, and until he dies, people never call him great. They never get the love they deserve.”
For Diljit, taking on Chamkila’s journey onscreen was an honour. Lauding the icon, he said, “Chamkila was a hundred times better an artist than I am, and I want to thank Chamkila for giving me the chance to do his biopic.”
Diljit Dosanjh’s portrayal of Chamkila earned him his first-ever Emmy nomination for Best Actor, taking Punjabi cinema to a global stage. Speaking about these big feet, he said, “I’m here for Chamkila. Chamkila gave me the chance to do his biopic. Chamkila allowed me to live his character on screen, and whatever real moments he went through in his life, even if only for a few seconds, I felt them myself.”
Despite not bringing home the trophy, the nomination itself meant more to him than an award could. “So I’m here for Chamkila, and that’s all I want to remember, and I want to thank Chamkila wherever he is for giving me the chance to do his biopic,” he concluded.
Diljit also shared a memory that was close to his heart. Diljit recalled watching the trailer for the first time: “The first time I saw the trailer of Amar Singh Chamkila was backstage on the day of the trailer launch. There was a shot in the film where I had to sit in the field, turn around, look at the camera, and smile, but when I saw that shot in the trailer… I felt like Chamkila himself was watching me and smiling.”
He added that the moment overwhelmed him deeply: “That got me very emotional; I could actually feel Chamkila’s presence there.”
