Rai is known for his films which talk about stories from the heartland and embraces the local flavour in emotions. Atrangi Re is the story about ‘great mix of cultures.’ The director said the film is the journey of its protagonists from Bihar to Madurai. The director, whose last film outing Zero couldn’t impress the audience, mentioned that he decided to have an unusual cast for his film because that’s what even the title of the film suggests. Rai was quoted saying, “The title means ‘funnily weird’. So, I needed a cast that’d raise questions. All my characters are ‘funnily weird’ and it’s their emotional journey.” Also Read - Trending Bollywood News January 30, 2020: Sara Ali Khan Joins Hands With Akshay Kumar-Dhanush For Aanand L Rai's Valentine's Day 2021 Release Atrangi Re

Adding that the protagonists of his story are never-seen-before, the director said they are shooting the film first in town in Bihar after which they will move to Madurai. The entire shooting of Atrangi Re is expected to be wrapped by the end of July and it’s from mid-April that Akshay joins the cast post-Bihar and Madurai schedule. This means it’s a start-to-finish schedule of 80-90 days.

Atrangi Re is being produced by Bhushan Kumar and Akshay while the director has once again collaborated with Himanshu Sharma for writing the script. Atrangi Re also marks Rai’s reunion with celebrated music composer AR Rahman who gave the music of Raanjhanaa that featured Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush in the lead. “Music has an integral role in the story-telling so I needed a strong pillar like Rahman,” the director said.
