Mumbai, April 15: Shah Rukh Khan starrer FAN movie is releasing today. In FAN, Shah Rukh Khan is playing double role – a fictional Bollywood superstar Aryan Khanna and of flawed fan Gaurav. Even before the FAN trailer was launched, a massive social campaign was launched by right-wing supporters against Shah Rukh Khan’s latest movie. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter were flooded by provocative posts against Shah Rukh Khan and his movie FAN.

The campaign against Shah Rukh Khan was result of his opinion on intolerance days before the release of his last film Dilwale. “Religious intolerance is shocking and will take us to the dark ages,” the 50-year old actor said. The debate over ‘intolerance’ was sparked after the killing of a Muslim man in Dadri over suspicion that he had consumed beef. The statement caused massive revolt against Shah Rukh Khan with right-wing activists protesting over his remark. (ALSO READ: FAN Movie Review: KRK gives a 4-Star Rating to Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN!)

The tolerant ‘bhakts’ could not tolerate his remark on ‘intolerance’ and failed to understand his words. To avenge, bhakts decided to boycott Shah Rukh Khan’s movie Dilwale. Barring the fact that Dilwale lacked many aspects of a good movie, one cannot ignore the fact that the social campaign against the movie led to the poor performance, a rarity for SRK films.

While Salman Khan’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo made Rs 40 odd crore on the opening day, SRK’s Dilwale registered barely half of that at Rs 21 crore. The collections dropped on weekends. Bajirao Mastani, which released alongside Dilwale, overtook the Shah Rukh Khan starter on box office and became a blockbuster. However Dilwale broke some box office records too, but the movie was boycotted and not screened in many theatres following agitation by bhakts. Eventually, Shah Rukh apologised for his statement, but the damage had been done.

Now Shah Rukh Khan is back with FAN and bhakts are in no mood to leave the actor. There has been intense campaign on social media against FAN. Trends like #BoycottFan, #ScrewTheFan, #BoycottHaklaKhan, #BoycottSRKGaddar and #SayNoToFan were seen on Twitter in last one month. Facebook groups, which have memebers in large numbers, has been sharing posts against Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN. Bhakts have been sharing Facebook status asking people to boycott ‘FAN’ to teach a lesson to Shah Rukh.

Will the ‘intolerant’ bhakts harm the box office collection of FAN too? If SRK’s ‘intolerance’ remark was wrong (though he never meant that if one watches the entire interview), they by boycotting his movie bhakts are proving him right. Are we really tolerant? If yes, why are we deliberately targeting a movie star? Is it because he is Shah Rukh Khan? Or is it because he is a Muslim? Well, the answer is very obvious.

Banning the movie of Shah Rukh Khan in the name of patriotism only goes on to reveal the pseudo-patriotism that actually exists in the hearts of many Indians. Boycotting the movie is a new form of social ‘intolerance’. I am sure, after reading this write-up many of them would question my ‘patriotism’ too. Let me conclude with the excerpts of SRK’s same interview in which he talked about ‘intolerance’. “If you are a patriot, you must love your country as a whole, not parts of it as religions and regions….People should not differentiate between people on the basis of region, religion, creed, colour or gender.”
