Days after his movie FAN received seven cuts at the hands of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), better known as the censor board, Shah Rukh Khan seems to be an upset man but also one who is trying to be ‘understanding’ to the point-of-view of the censors. The actor, in an interview, explained how the censors have different rules for him, as he is a bigger star and therefore more influential. So, if he smokes on screen or utters a swear word, more children are likely to feel it is cool to do those things than with any other star.
At the same time, many of his films are non-controversial, too, felt the actor. Shah Rukh Khan is believed to have said, “I was shooting Raees and I hit the guy really hard. He said, ‘Sir, yeh cut jayega’, and I said ‘Yeh nai katega, because there is no meaning attached to it. Cuts were enough; it wasn’t anything big.”
The actor also explained how cuss words and double entendre is interpreted differently in Delhi and Mumbai. “At one place, we say ‘ghanta’, in Delhi I can understand that a Delhiite says ‘ghante se’, which actually means something specific but when we don’t say in those terms it actually means ‘Suck my d*ick’ in a very convoluted way. But a Delhiite says it in the sense like ‘Ghante se karunga main’. They don’t mean it like that, but I guess when you are not from that area it can seem like we are using the wrong sense to be portrayed in the film through that word.”
SRK further explained with an example from his 2014 film Happy New Year, saying, “The same cut was in Happy New Year…Boman says ‘Babaji ka ghanta’ and then they (censors) made it ‘thullu’ (instead of ghanta). But I think people may not think of it like a gaali, but may get furious…there were dialogue cuts, there were specific cuts like 10% cuts that weren’t a big deal and some language cuts.”
The actor, though, did not understand the censors having a problem with the word ‘Kameena’. “I mean, there is a film called ‘Kameenay’,” reasoned SRK, referring to the Shahid Kapoor-Vishal Bhardwaj film.
Shah Rukh Khan, like a mature adult, understood the point-of-view of the censors. He said, “Sometimes they have explained to me, and I think it’s okay, they have told me two things that ‘you know when you smoke a cigarette in a film, it can entice more children to do it, so we have to be little strict with you. I’m talking about 10-15 years old (kids)…when you say a gaali, it becomes cooler for youngster to do the same, so maybe you should not’.”
Although a bit upset, SRK concluded on a positive note, “It doesn’t make a huge difference to your film and it doesn’t make a huge difference to us also. I won’t like my son to say kameena.” We wouldn’t like that, either! (ALSO READ: Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan gets 7 cuts from Censor Board!)
