On Saturday, director-producer Vikram Bhatt’s mother, Varsha Bhatt, passed away at the age of 85. According to sources, she suffered from multiple organ failure following a severe kidney infection. Her cremation will be taking place at the Versova crematorium at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Her demise was officially confirmed by the director’s team.
Varsha Bhatt, was the wife of acclaimed cinematographer Pravin Bhatt, who has worked on iconic movies such as Sadak (1991), Agneepath (1990), Aashiqui (1990), Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke (1993), and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin (1991). He has played a massive role in transforming the visual medium for generations to come.
Despite common belief, Vikram Bhatt has no family connection with Mahesh Bhatt. The two share same surname and a professional association. He started his career at the age of 14, as an assistant director to Mukul Anand on his debut film Kanoon Kya Karega. After that, he directed Ghulam starring Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji, which became a commercial hit.
Vikram has been mentored by Mahesh Bhatt, who helped him honing his craft. In 2008, Vikram made a comeback to filmmaking, and delivered successful horror dramas such as as 1920, Shaapit, and Haunted – 3D. His 2011 release Haunted – 3D became the highest-Hindi horror grosser at the time, and even introduced stereoscopic 3D in India for the first time. He also directed the notable franchise Raaz.
His daughter Krishna is also a filmmaker, and debuted in films associated with Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt. Currently, Vivek has Haunted: Ghosts of the Past 3D in his directorial pipeline.
