Salman Khan’s little brother Sohail Khan is back to film direction with the Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer Freaky Ali. After making Jai Ho in 2014, Sohail Khan took a two-year sabbatical from filmmaking. In the meanwhile, he got busy creating a hatke movie that would entertain viewers at the same time give some quality cinema. He came up with Freaky Ali starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the title role. The sports rom-com also stars Arbaaz Khan, Amy Jackson and Jas Arora in pivotal roles. Seema Biswas, Nikitin Dheer and Asif Basra are seen in supporting roles. Sohail Khan has also written and produced the film under his banner. Also Read - Asif Basra Death: Manoj Bajpayee Says 'he Was Peace Loving, That's Why he Lived in Dharamshala'
Freaky Ali is based on the American comedy film Happy Gilmore released in 1996. So, Freaky Ali is the story of a commoner Ali’s journey who goes on to become a golf champion. We have seen Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a variety of roles till date but with Freaky Ali he takes the challenge of performing in a comic role as the main lead and at the same time romancing the female lead. But has the Bollywood actor put his best foot forward in this genre as well? Read our movie review of Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Amy Jackson’s Freaky Ali. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is a cricket fanatic and lives in a small locality where he struggles to make a living by selling undergarments. His best friend Maqsood (played by Arbaaz Khan), a debt collector, pulls him into extortion. During one such session, Ali and Maqsood visit a rich man in a golf club to collect some extortion money. He is playing golf and is trying to putt for nearly three hours. Seeing him, a frustrated Ali taunts the businessman for wasting so much time in such a simple shot. His words hurt the businessman’s ego and he asks Ali to ‘give it a shot’. Luckily, Ali successfully puts the ball inside the hole. A caddie (Asif Basra) who notices Ali’s unusual talent decides to train him and make him a champion in this elite sport. What happens next is the complete core of the film. We have seen Nawazuddin Siddiqui excel in all his movies until now. No one can do what this man can with his regular looks in films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Raman Raghav, among others. We also got to see Nawaz’s comic side in bits in films like The Lunchbox and Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Freaky Ali is Nawazuddin’s first rom-com and in the film you will not only see his perfect comic timing but his romantic equation with the beautiful Amy Jackson too. Nawaz is simply too good in his part but this Sohail Khan film will not be counted as one of his best films!
After getting acknowledged for his comic role in Dabangg that he had produced for brother Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan must have decided to turn his focus to comedy. As the local extortionist, he adds perfect entertainment value to Freaky Ali.
Jas Arora, former model and actor, and the guy who became popular after the song Gud Nalon Ishq Mitha, is back in action with Freaky Ali. He looks way different than what he was in that sensational music video. Although he did quite a few films after the video, Jas never got appreciated for his roles. In Freaky Ali, he plays a crucial role of an egoistic and ace golf champion who looks down upon Ali’s talent. Jas belongs to a royal family and carries an emphasised diction which stands out and seems unnecessary. (ALSO READ: ‘Freaky Ali’ will have you in splits, says Salman Khan)
Seema Biswas plays Ali’s Aai (mother) in the movie and is a regular mom who is obsessed with her son. Nikitin Dheer plays a local goon and has tried his luck in comedy with Freaky Ali. However, his attempt miserably fails and we feel he is best suited for roles like Thangabali. Amy Jackson has a very small role in the movie and we hardly hear her speak.
What we like about Freaky Ali
The first half of Freaky Ali is quite interesting and entertaining. The filmmaker manages to keep the humour quotient alive throughout the first part. Nawazuddin looks refreshing in his role as Ali and he is the only person who will make you watch the film till the end. We also like Nawazuddin and Arbaaz’s bromance in Freaky Ali. The Sohail Khan film looks pleasing to the eye, with some really good shots being taken at scenic locales. What we don’t like about Freaky Ali
Raaj Shaandilyaa has penned the dialogues for Freaky Ali and he has done a botched up job. While some of the funny lines in the film are quite brilliant, the emotional segment sounded way to clichéd.
The songs of Freaky Ali are also quite dull and don’t add up to the entertainment. (ALSO READ: Baar Baar Dekho vs Freaky Ali: Censors object to bra scene in Sidharth Malhotra film; but retain ‘chaddi’ scene in Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer!)
Amy Jackson and Nawazuddin don’t look like a couple at all in the movie. You don’t see any chemistry between them and you just have to assume that they are in love.
Freaky Ali takes a dip in the second half and the plot becomes quite predictable. Although you would be hoping for a new twist, the movie takes the much expected end.
Sohail has tried to exaggerate the look of the local residents by showing kids without T-shirts almost throughout the film. It’s not always necessary that poor people would move around sans clothes like in Freaky Ali.
Jackie Shroff has a cameo in Freaky Ali and his role was not quite required in the film.
Freaky Ali is an entertaining watch but fails to offer something new on the platter. You can consider this Nawazuddin Siddiqui starrer if you want to see him in a light role or if you have already watched Sidharth Malhotra and Katrina Kaif’s Baar Baar Dekho, which also released today.
