Gabbar from Sholay was not created by Salim-Javed; makers took inspiration from..., even police used to fear

The 1975 blockbuster Sholay made history with its record-breaking success in theaters. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the film is still remembered for its unforgettable characters. Among them, the most feared and iconic was Gabbar Singh, played by Amjad Khan. But did you know that Gabbar’s character was inspired by a real-life dacoit?

How Sholay Got Its Iconic Villain

Surprisingly, the idea of Gabbar Singh’s character did not come from director Ramesh Sippy or scriptwriters Salim-Javed. The real-life Gabbar Singh’s notorious image influenced the film’s makers, leading to the creation of one of Bollywood’s most memorable villains. Sholay owes a part of its legendary success to this terrifying character, who continues to haunt audiences even today.

The Real-Life Gabbar Singh

According to a report by BBC Hindi, in the 1950s, a ruthless dacoit named Gabbar Singh Gujjar terrorised people in central India. He was born in 1926 in Dang village, Bhind (Madhya Pradesh), and was wanted by the police in three states. Like in the film, there was also a Rs 50,000 reward for his capture.

Gabbar Singh was known for his brutality. He had taken a vow to cut off the noses of 116 people as an offering to his Kuldevi (family deity). He even attacked policemen, cutting off their noses and ears. His reign of terror spread across Bhind, Gwalior, Chambal, Etawah, and Dholpur, and the villagers were so scared that they never informed the police about his whereabouts.

Gabbar Singh’s End

Madhya Pradesh’s Inspector General of Police, KF Rustamji, wrote about Gabbar Singh in his diary. In 1959, Deputy SP Rajendra Prasad Modi was assigned to track down and eliminate him. That same year, a villager revealed Gabbar’s hideout, leading to his death.

Do You Know Amitabh Bachchan Was Not the First Choice to Play Jai?

Every character in Sholay left a lasting impact, but interestingly, Amitabh Bachchan was not the original choice for his role Jai. The filmmakers initially wanted Shatrughan Sinha for the part, but things didn’t work out, and Amitabh was cast instead. A similar casting story is linked to Gabbar Singh’s role as well.
