Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s love story is among those from which people draw inspiration. The bond between the two has been an example for many. However, their journey was not easy. Though the couple has been married for 33 years now and has achieved name, fame, money, and love, they started on a bumpy road.
Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri met when they were in their teens. The two fell in love quickly without knowing the challenges ahead. During those days, SRK was a regular boy, and above all, both SRK and Gauri came from different religions, which also became a hurdle for the couple.
However, fighting all the odds, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri finally tied the knot on October 25, 1991. As Gauri turns a year older today, an earlier interview of Shah Rukh is making rounds on the internet where the actor opens up about his personal life, especially what happened on his reception day.
In an old talk show with Farida Jalal, Shah Rukh revealed, “I remember, when their whole family, old-fashioned people—I respect them all and their beliefs—but at that time, in that old-fashioned reception, all of them were sitting there when I came in and heard the whispering, ‘Hmmm… He’s a Muslim boy. Hmm… Will he change the girl’s name? Will she (Gauri) become a Muslim?’”
During the same interview, Shah Rukh Khan also revealed that he jokingly asked Gauri on the reception day to wear a burqa and even change her name to Ayesha. Sharing the same, he continued, “They were all talking in Punjabi. So, I looked at the time and said, ‘OK Gauri, put on your burqa and let’s read the namaaz now.’ The whole family stared at us, wondering if I had already changed her religion. So, I told them, ‘From now on, she will wear a burqa all the time, she won’t ever leave the house, her name will be changed to Ayesha, and she will be like this.’”
He said that this statement left Gauri’s entire family in shock, and they were concerned about what would happen next. However, later, the actor admitted that it was wrong to play with people’s sentiments, especially when it comes to religion.
Meanwhile, the couple has now been married for 33 years. They are blessed with three kids, including the youngest, AbRam, the middle one, Suhana Khan, and the eldest, Aryan Khan.
