The term ‘prestitute’ was initially used by members of the independent media towards members of the mainstream media, who align with certain corporate or political parties for monetary or other benefits. These days, the term is being loosely thrown around by every Tom, Dick and Harry to bring down the views of media, if it hurts their personal believes.
Former Bollywood singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya vented out his frustration at media’s support towards Ustad Ghulam Ali by terming them ‘Prestitutes’. The Pakistani singer’s concert which was scheduled to be held in Mumbai had to be cancelled following threats from Shiv Sena. He called a singer of worldwide fame as person from a ‘terrorist country’ who was shameless to come to a country which has previously driven out many a Pakistanis. While Abhijeet’s ignorance of saffron terrorism can be ignored, it is amazing how an artist fails to understand another artist. Despite numerous celebrities like Resul Pookutty and Farhan Akhtar among others’ making an attempt to drill sense into the head of Abhijeet, nothing seemed to work.
For all the education and fame that Abhijeet amassed, he never got the basic learning that everyone from Pakistan is not a terrorist. Terrorism is a reality in Pakistan as much as it is in India. And for all the talks to look down upon Pakistan, Farhan Akhtar rightly pointed out how Abhijeet himself made his career by singing songs stolen from Pakistan. Is this anger coming out of the fact that Abhijeet isn’t getting enough opportunities these days, while Ustad Ghulam Ali remains evergreen? Maybe, yes. Because at times like these, even kamala R Khan is making more sense.
