Govinda's biggest disaster film, earned just 1% of its budget, was remake of a blockbuster, ended actor's career, lead actress was...
Govinda earned the title of Bollywood’s ‘comedy king’ because of unparallel ability to deliver humour on-screen. His flamboyant clothing and quirky dance moves till date remains iconic. However, in 2019, the actor failed to impress audiences with his comic role in the film Rangeela Raja. Helmed by Sikander Bharti, the comedy drama was produced by ex-CBFC chairman Pahlaj Nihalani, with whom Govinda collaborated in films like Ilzaam, Aankhen, Shola Aur Shabnam, Andaz.
The films saw Govinda in a dual role. It revolves around the story of two brothers, Raja and Yogi (both played by Govinda), who are stark opposites in nature. The film also features Digangana Suryavanshi, Mishika Chourasia, Shakti Kapoor and Prem Chopra in pivotal roles. Rangeela Raja is unofficial remake of Rajinikanth’s blockbuster Netrikkan (1981).
Rangeela Raja is considered Govinda’s biggest flop as it managed to earn only 1% of its budget. Made at an estimate cost of Rs 19 crore, the film garnered just Rs 18 lakh during its entire theatrical release.

Rangeela Raja was originally scheduled to release on November 6, 2018, but the date was later postponed to January 2019. On December 2, 2018, the film’s release was indefinitely delayed as Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) withheld the certification.
Producer Pahaj Nikhalni appealed the decision to the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal). On December 14, 2018, the CBFC finally cleared the film with just three cuts, down from the original 20, allowing Nihalani to proceed with its release on January 11, 2019.
Nihalani accused CBFC’s chairperson Prasoon Joshi of favouritism towards major studios. Govinda also addressed the controversy in a press conference, claiming that few people were deliberating hindering the film’s release by not providing adequate screens.
Following the release of Rangeela Raja, Govinda stepped away from films, taking an indefinite break from Bollywood. He used to make occasional appearances on television shows. Meanwhile, his younger son Yashvardhan Ahuja is gearing up to make his Bollywood debut with an untitled love story that is going to be directed by Sai Rajesh.
