Pandit Birju Maharaj is one of the renowned classical dancers in India. Known for his excellence in Indian classical dance, Birju Maharaj started taking dance classes at the young age of thirteen, at the Sangeet Bharti in New Delhi. He is from the legendary Maharaj family of Kathak dancers, which includes his two uncles, Shambhu Maharaj and Lachhu Maharaj, and his father and guru, Acchan Maharaj. He has also choreographed some beautiful dance numbers for the Bollywood films, and the recently added is Mohe Rang Do Laal from the film Bajirao Mastani. He is a receiver of many accolades like the Padma Vibhushan (1986), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalidas Samman and also a National Award for Best Choreography  for Vishwaroopam. He has traveled extensively around the world and performed on thousands of stages. He is the founder of kalashram and continues to teach budding classical dancers.
