When we think about the superstars from the past, one name that invariably flashes into our mind is that of Dilip Kumar. The superstar made an impressive print on the minds and hearts of the masses with his touching performances. He became the Tragedy King of Bollywood, not just because the plot of most of his films revolved around a tragic story, but because with his honest performance, he could move anyone to tears. He pierced into the cinema industry as Mohammad Yusuf Khan and soon ruled the theatres as Dilip Kumar after his first movie Jwar Bhata. This Bollywood icon was then unstoppable and he gave some of the marvelous hits like Devdas, Madhumati, Naya Daur, Daag, Mughal-e-Azam, Kohinoor, Ram and Shyam and the list is endless. Dilip Kumar and Kamini Kaushal:
Dilip Kumar was very much in love with his Shaheed movie’s co-star Kamini Kaushal. On the sets of Shaheed both the leads were convinced about their love and intended to get married. However, luck wasn’t by their side. Kamini’s brother, who was in the Indian army, was against this relationship. Dilip-Kamini marriage would have also disturbed the family’s convenient arrangement where Kamini was married to her late sister’s husband to be able to nurture their child. Dilip Kumar and Madhubala:
Bollywood’s most desired actress Madhubala was madly in love with Dilip Kumar and the duo even got engaged. However, there was a huge ego problem between Madhubala’s father and Dilip and that was the reason behind the breakup. Madhubala was not in favor of disobeying her father and thus she asked Dilip to apologise to her father for the shooting issues. Dilip Kumar however refused to do so and that created the unending tiff between Madhubala and Dilip. Madhubala was shattered when Dilip later married someone else. After the untimely death of Madhubala, Dilip too was depressed for a long time.
Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala:
This Jodi created history in Hindi cinema with their burning chemistry in 6 movies that they together. Naturally, the sets were filled with rumors of their relationship but both of them continued to be in denial. Now despite their constant refusal, there was this buzz that Vyjayanthimala was crushing on her handsome co-star Dilip and they were indeed in a relationship. It was also said that this was Dilip Kumar’s third love saga after the ones with Kamini and Madhubala.
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu:
Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu are highly respected in Bollywood and are also known as the ultimate couple. Saira fell in love with the Thespian just when she was 12. However, the Devdas actor stayed away from the relationships after his failed affair with Madhubala. Saira was introduced to him as his co-actor but Dilip refuted her as his heroine saying that she was too young to be cast opposite him. However, destiny had something else in store. At the age of 22, Saira married her love Dilip Kumar who was 44 then. This marriage stood the test of time. Every year on his birthday, Saira Banu invites his friends and family home for a home-made treat. She was even seen taking care of hubby Dilip when he was admitted in the ICU recently and their jodi certainly makes us believe that love is forever.
Dilip Kumar and Asma:
Dilip Kumar and Asma’s love story was a big blow to Saira Banu. Dilip fell in love with this Hyderabadi pretty lady and got attached to her within months. Their love blossomed and both of them got married. Dilip and Saira got divorced and that left Saira heartbroken. However just after two years, there was a rift between Dilip and Asma as Dilip found out that she was cheating on him and that led to their divorce. After they got apart, Saira remarried Dilip and are still happily together.
This makes us sometimes wonder if all that pain, anguish and despair that Dilip Kumar could portray so naturally on screen, which also won him the Tragedy King title, found it’s inspiration from his personal life.
