Robert Redford, the actor and director who became a Hollywood icon with films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men, passed away Tuesday morning at his home in Utah. He was 89.
Cindi Berger, Redford’s publicist, said he died “in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”
Redford was celebrated as one of the most recognisable leading men of the late 1960s and 1970s, known for his windswept hair, effortless charm, and magnetic screen presence. Beyond acting, he was an accomplished director, committed political activist, and cultural entrepreneur who shaped American cinema in multiple ways.
Redford won the Best Director Oscar for Ordinary People (1980), the first of nine films he directed. His career, spanning over six decades, included two Academy Awards, including an honorary Oscar in 2002, and three Golden Globes, highlighted by the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in 1994.
He was admired not just for his acting, but also for his ability to identify and nurture talent. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, saying Americans “admire Bob not just for his remarkable acting, but for having figured out what to do next.”
Redford’s legacy goes far beyond acting. In 1981, he founded the Sundance Institute, a nonprofit that organises the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The festival has become a premier platform for offbeat projects, launching the careers of countless independent filmmakers.
“I saw other stories out there that weren’t having a chance to be told and I thought, ‘Well, maybe I can commit my energies to giving those people a chance,’” Redford said in a 2018 interview. “As I look back on it, I feel very good about that.”
Charles Robert Redford Jr. was born on August 18, 1936, in Santa Monica, California, to Martha Hart and Charles Robert Redford Sr., a milkman turned oil company accountant. He described himself as a poor student with a passion for the arts and athletics. After graduating from Van Nuys High School in 1954, he briefly attended the University of Colorado Boulder before travelling through Europe, soaking in the culture of France, Spain, and Italy.
