Imtiaz Ali’s recent film, Amar Singh Chamkila continues to capture attention even two weeks after its release on Netflix. The film has garnered praise not only from critics but also from Chamkila’s family, who attended a screening in Mumbai. In an exclusive interview with News18 Showsha, Imtiaz Ali shared insights into the family dynamics post-screening. He mentioned bringing together both sides of the family, including Chamkila’s first wife Gurmail Kaur and their son Jaiman Singh, along with his second wife Amarjot’s family. Despite their differences, Imtiaz emphasised the importance of unity, which he facilitated during the event.
Imtiaz also revealed Gurmail’s emotional reaction to the film, stating that she loved it and even hugged him tearfully. He hinted at the complexity of Chamkila’s life, suggesting that there was more to explore, including his relationship with Gurmail and their shared experiences. “After Gurmail saw the film with her daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, she told me that she loved it. She hugged me and cried. We all got emotional. Her feedback at that point was really positive”, Imtiaz said.
The filmmaker reveals that not many know that Gurmail got pregnant again after Amarjot gave birth to Jaiman. “He had another child with Gurmail after having a child with Amarjot. The circumstance of that has been explained to me by Chamkila’s sister. I’ve it on record and I had written a scene about it also but had to cut it down because it was somehow a bit less relevant than the ones that were already there,” he states.
