The dynamics of Indian cinema has been changing rapidly. It is no longer dominated just by Hindi films. With the rise of South cinema, industry is being reaching to a larger level. Films like KGF, Baahubali, RRR were all released on a pan-India level and received a greater response from all parts of the country. With a fanbase like this, films are doing a tremendous business at the box office, breaking records globally.

One such film when released created a storm, even before releasing in theatres. We are talking about South actor Mohanlal‘s 2021-released film, Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea. It became the first Indian movie to earn Rs 100 crore before its release. Reportedly, the historic drama was released on 4,100 screens and minted Rs 100 crore through bookings.

Marakkar was originally planned to be released in March 2020 but was postponed because of Covid pandemic. Producer Antony Perumbavoor was initially considering to release the film on OTT as the environment at the box office was not favourable to ensure his financial interests. But, Minister for Film Development Corporation and Chalachitra Academy Saji Cherian convinced him to release it on big-screens as it would help the industry to bounce back after pandemic. This decision worked in the favour of producer as the film generated an incredible response at the box office.

Helmed by Priyadarshan, Marakkar starred Mohanlal in the titular role and had an impressive cast of Arjun Sarja, Suniel Shetty, Pranav Mohanlal, Manju Warrier, Ashok Selvan, Prabhu, Siddique, Nedumudi Venu, Hareesh Peradi, Keerthy Suresh and Kalyani Priyadarshan. The music of Marakkar was composed by Rahul Raj and Ankit Suri, while cinematography was handled by S Thirunavukarasu. After multiple delays, the film finally released in December 2021 and generated unprecedented box office collection prior its release.
