During India’s struggle for independence, at a time when woman’s education was not widely promoted, this actress emerged as country’s first educated heroine. Renowned for her strong performances in social films, she gained immense fame and became the first Indian face of the luxury soap brand Lux.
Born into a Marathi-speaking family in Dharwad, Karnataka, Leela Chitnis‘s father was an English Literature professor. With a graduate degree in B.A., Leela became one of the highly educated film actresses. After completing graduation, she began working for Natyamanwantar, an avant-garde theatre company based in Bombay. Soon, she moved towards working as an extra in Bollywood films. She entered the industry in 1935, with her widely recognised role in Gentleman Daku (1937). Then, Leela took on leading roles in a variety of comedies and tragedies and eventually went on to establish herself in the industry.
Leela became a prominent star in Indian cinema from the 1930s to 1980s. She worked under the most prominent production houses, most notably Bombay Talkies. She was renowned for her strong performances in social films which intended to address issue in Indian society. Some of her most-favourites roles, during this period, were in Jailor (1938), Bandhan (1940), Kangan (1939), Ardhangi (1940), and Azad (1940). Moreover, she also grabbed limelight for her conventional beauty and became the ambassador of Lux Soap, becoming the first Indian actress to hold this role.
Coming to her personal life, Leela Chitnis married Dr. Gajanan Yeshwant Chitnis, a gentleman from her own Brahmin community at the age of 15 or 16. The couple had four children, all boys. After she divorced her husband, she worked as a school teacher before turning an actress.
