Mughal-e-Azam, the epic period drama by K Asif, is one of India’s most loved and successful films. Back when it was released in theatre in 1960, the film had earned Rs 11 crore worldwide, which translates to a whopping Rs 4000 crore today. It became one of the highest grossing Indian film at that time.
Mughal-e-Azam was released at a time when tickets were sold under Rs 1 (which is Rs 200 today). It is estimated to have sold over 15 crore tickets worldwide during its run. It has sold more tickets that any other film in India. The craze of the film was so high that some tickets were sold in black for as high as Rs 100 (which is Rs 9000 today). Its inflation adjusted earn of Rs 4000 crore, is higher than the earnings of Animal (Rs 900 crore), RRR (Rs 1387 crore), Kalki 2898 AD (Rs 1040 crore).
Starring Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Prithviraj Kapoor, Durga Khote, and Ajit, Mughal-e-Azam was a historic epic, featuring the rebellion of Mughal Prince Salim against his father emperor Akbar. The film was made under budget Rs 1.5 crore, considering one of the most expensive Indian films at the time.
No other Indian film crosses Rs 3000 crore when adjusted with inflation except Mughal-e-Azam. However, Sholay do come across Rs 2800 crore. Other films that cross Rs 2000 crore after inflation adjustment are Dangal, Baahubali 2, Mother India, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge.
