‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ is an animated film, which was jointly produced by Japan and India. This film was released in 1992. The film was jointly directed by Koichi Sasaki, Ram Mohan, and Yugo Sako. Apart from Koichi Sasaki, Ram Mohan and Yugo Sako, Narendra Sharma, Rani Burra, and Hiroshi Onogi also contributed significantly to writing their screenplay. ‘Ramayana’ was banned in India

When ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ was released, riots were raging in India due to the demolition of Babri Masjid. Due to this, the film was not allowed to be released in India.

Many artists gave voice in ‘Ramayana’

The film was produced in English and artists like Nikhil Kapoor, Rael Padamsee, Uday Mathan, Mishal Verma, Noel Godin, Bulbul Mukherjee, Madhulika Verma, Rahul Bose, and Pearl Padamsee gave voice to important characters in the film.

Some reports also suggest that the Vishwa Hindu Parishad had received a complaint of tampering with facts in ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’. After this, they wrote a protest letter to the Japanese Embassy in Delhi and said that no foreigner could justify the Ramayana, as it is a great symbol of Indian culture.

‘Ramayana’ was shown on Doordarshan

Shortly after the protests against ‘Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama’ in theatres, the film was dubbed and telecast on Doordarshan. In the Hindi dubbing, Arun Govil voiced the character of Ram, Namrata Sawhney as Sita, Shakti Singh as Lakshman, Dara Singh as Hanuman, and Amrish Puri as Ravana.
