Determining the true success of a film has long been a topic of debate among cinephiles and industry experts. Some believe that a film’s cultural impact and legacy are the best measures of success, while others point to box office earnings as the definitive gauge. Even when focusing on earnings, however, the definition of success is subjective. Some look at sheer revenue, while others prioritize profitability. By the latter measure, one Indian film stands out for its extraordinary 6000% return on investment. Can you guess which film it is?
Released in 2017, Secret Superstar, directed by Advait Chandan and produced by Aamir Khan, is considered India’s most profitable film. Created on a modest budget of ₹15 crore, it initially performed well in India, grossing ₹64 crore domestically. Its success continued internationally with an additional ₹65 crore from overseas markets. However, the film’s true breakthrough came when it was released in China. There, it amassed an incredible $124 million, bringing its global earnings to over ₹900 crore—more than 60 times its original investment. This staggering figure shattered the previous record set by Jai Santoshi Maa, which earned 20 times its budget.
What sets Secret Superstar apart is its earnings, which far surpassed those of some of India’s biggest blockbusters. Depending on the source, its global earnings range from ₹905 crore to ₹966 crore, surpassing films like Stree 2 (₹857 crore), PK (₹769 crore), Gadar 2 (₹691 crore), and Baahubali: The Beginning (₹617 crore). This achievement is even more remarkable considering Secret Superstar was made on a fraction of the budget of these films and lacked major star power, with Aamir Khan making only a brief cameo. Instead, the spotlight was on 16-year-old Zaira Wasim, whose performance struck a chord with audiences.
The film’s massive success, particularly in China, can be attributed to the rising popularity of both Aamir Khan and Zaira Wasim, who gained fame from their previous collaboration in Dangal. Moreover, the film’s poignant theme of teenage dreams and aspirations resonated deeply with Chinese audiences. As of November 2024, Secret Superstar remains the 10th highest-grossing Indian film of all time, proving that profitability often tells a more compelling success story than mere box office figures.
