Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s Indu Sarkar, which was mired in controversy ever since it was announced, has finally released today (July 28). However, workers of the Indian National Congress who have been protesting against the project stalled the screening of the film at a Thane multiplex.

Senior Congress leaders from the party’s Thane unit barged into Inox cinema hall in Korum Mall and stopped the film. No sooner than the film started, Thane District President Manoj Shinde, along with other party workers entered the screen in which the film was about to begin and started raising slogans against Indu Sarkar director Madhur Bhandarkar and the BJP government in the Centre and state.

Speaking to India.com, Shinde said, “It’s an attempt by the BJP government to tarnish the image of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who has done so much for the country. We cannot let the screening happen.” They also abused the filmmaker, “We are ashamed that Madhur Bhandarkar, who is a Marathi maanus, has made the film. He should not make such films.” Even though the mall and theatre management and even cops tried to talk to these angry men on a mission, they didn’t relent and threatened of dire consequences if the screening is held.

Relenting to their demand, the multiplex authorities cancelled the show and refunded the tickets of all those who had turned up to watch the political drama.

India.com reached out to Bhandarkar who was appalled to know what happened. He said, “This is shocking. The Supreme Court has cleared the film. I will talk to the authorities.” Neil Nitin Mukesh, who plays Sanjay Gandhi in the film, also expressed his displeasure over the incident. He said, “This is simply unfair. After getting cleared and being allowed to be screened by the Supreme Court, this is heartbreaking for all associated.”

The film Indu Sarkar is set against the backdrop of the emergency and portrays characters inspired by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and her son Sanjay Gandhi. Earlier on Thursday, Supreme Court gave a nod for the film’s release after quashing the plea of a woman seeking a ban on the film. She has been claiming to be Sanjay Gandhi’s biological daughter.
