Madhur Bhandarkar has made some award winning films in the past. When it comes to his films, the audience know for sure that there is going to be quality. With his latest release ‘Indu Sarkar’, the expectations were same. We all know that the movie is based on The Emergency period and all of them are aware about it. Being a political driven film, there were many who were curious to watch it, which has released today. The movie starring Kirti Kulhari, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Anupam Kher, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Supriya Vinod in the lead has received mixed response. Let’s take a look at some of the reviews below:

NDTV: Lack of genuine creative acuity and a cavalier attitude to period details are the film’s biggest drawbacks. Bollywood has never been great with political cinema. Even by those lax standards, Indu Sarkar is the pits. It is high on dramatic flourish, low on impact. So insipid is the 139-minute film, it leaves you wondering why on earth it has seen the light of day unless you deign to consider the political purpose that it serves in the current political scenario. It’s hard to find a purely cinematic reason for its existence.

TOI Entertainment: Indu Sarkar is at its best when it focuses on its protagonist’s emotional struggles and dilemmas, leaving the politics behind. Indu and Navin’s story by itself is far more palatable than the elaborate political schemes surrounding them. Kirti Kulhari shoulders the responsibility of the central role with a lot of earnestness and keeps you interested. Tota Roy Chowdhury makes for a good foil to Indu.

The Wire: Indu Sarkar has such shoddy filmmaking and writing that you can almost imagine Bhandarkar checking off a list as the film goes on, introducing characters, setting up conflicts. This film is so one-dimensional, mirthless and lacking in nuance that it’s difficult to seriously engage with it. Indu Sarkar tells us less about the Emergency and more about a grown man’s boyish insecurity and superiority. It’s unfortunate that those tendencies, in this film, are not its villain’s but Bhandarkar’s. (ALSO READ: Indu Sarkar Controversy: Congress Workers Stop Film Screening! Scroll.in: Indu Sarkar is nowhere near Sudhir Mishra’s Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi in terms of understanding the rich and complex politics of the 1970s. This film is yet another Madhur Bhandarkar chronicle of corruption in high places. If there is one thing the director understands well, it is the tendency of individuals to manipulate the system to line their pockets.
