According to the police, Shariful is a Bangladeshi national who had entered India illegally and had changed his name to Bijoy Das. After the incident, the suspect spent the night at a bus stop near Patwardhan Garden before fleeing to Worli.
The police reported that the attacker climbed from the sixth floor to the twelfth floor using a shaft and pipes, eventually entering the flat through a bathroom window. During this time, Saif Ali Khan and his staff noticed him. The attacker demanded ₹1 crore from Saif’s employees, and when Saif intervened, the assailant stabbed him in the back. After the attack, Saif and his staff locked the attacker inside the flat, but he managed to escape using the shaft.
Following his arrest, the police revealed that after the incident, the attacker spent the night at a bus stop and later fled to Worli by train. From his bag, the police recovered tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, nylon rope, and other suspicious items. The attacker’s real name is Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, a resident of the Jhalkathi district in the Barisal Division of Bangladesh. After entering India illegally, he concealed his identity by adopting the name Bijoy Das.
Eliyama Philip, whose responsible for taking care of Taimur and Jehangir, reported to the police that she was the first one to spot the intruder. The 56-year-old lady woke up after she heard a noise at around 2 am. After noticing the unusual sound, Eliyama checked the bathroom and assumed that it could be Kareena Kapoor Khan checking on their sons. “I went back to sleep but, again, I realised something was wrong. So I woke up again and saw a man come out of the bathroom and go into the boy’s room. I quickly got up and went to Jeh’s room. The attacker then put his finger near his mouth and said ‘Don’t make any noise, nobody will go out’ in Hindi,” said Eliyama. She further added, “When I rushed to pick up Jeh, the man, armed with a wooden stick and a long Hexa blade, ran towards me and tried attacking me (sic).”
“I tried to block the attack by putting my hand forward, but the blade hit me near the wrists of both my hands and on the middle finger of my left hand At that time, I asked him, ‘What do you want?’. He said, ‘I want money.’ I asked, ‘How much do you want?’ He said in English, ‘one crore’,” read her statement. She concluded by saying, “Saif Sir somehow managed to get away from him and we all ran out of the room and pulled the door of the room (sic).”
Based on the items found in his bag and the method of the break-in, the police suspect that the attacker may have been a professional thief. Interestingly, the attacker was unaware that he had broken into Saif Ali Khan’s home. It was only after watching news reports on TV and social media that he realized he had intruded into a Bollywood star’s flat.
The police have filed multiple charges against the attacker, including knife assault, attempted robbery, and illegal trespassing under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, a case under the Passport Act has been registered for illegal entry into India.
