Indian cinema has a special spot for singing and dancing inspired by western cinema musicals. Fast forward to now when a Bollywood movie seems incomplete without a song and dance routine, whether its a classic movie like Mughal-e-Azam or an Oscar-winning movie like Slumdog Millionaire.
In order to celebrate International Dance Day that is observed every year on 29th April, 2018 we look at some of the most iconic dancers in Bollywood. This day has been created by the International Theatre Institute which is UNESCO’s main partner for the performing arts. This day has been chosen as it is the birth anniversary of Jean-Georges Noverre who is considered the creator of modern ballet. This day is celebrated annually and encourages education and participation in dance.
Some female dancers have been etched into our memories because of their iconic dance routines and influence on Bollywood. We look at some of the recent actors who dance with skill and glamour.
Madhuri Dixit Nene: The beautiful and talented actress, is known for her fascinating dance skills and songs like ‘Ek Do Teen’, ‘Dhak Dhak Karne Laga’, ‘Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai’, ‘Chane Ke Khet Mein’ etc.She is a trained Kathak dancer and started dancing at a very young age. She has even started her own online dance academy ‘Dance With Madhuri’ in which she teaches lessons to her fans and aspiring dancers.
Sri Devi: An Indian actress and producer who lost her life this year due to accidental drowning is remembered for her iconic roles and dance performances. She has acted in Tamil, Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She was married to producer Boney Kapoor and is survived by two daughter Khushi and Jhanvi. The latter will be making her film debut this year.She was known for her famous Nagin dance and other dance performances like ‘Hawa Hawai’ and ‘Kaate Nahin Kat Te’.
Hema Malini: An actress, director, producer and dancing powerhouse she is known for her classical dancing moves. She has even been awarded by the Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts (SaMaPa) for contributing towards Bharatnatyam dance and Indian culture. Her daughters Esha and Ahana Deol are both trained Odissi dancers. She also owns a dance school called Natya Vihar Kalakendra Dance school.
Helen: She is a Burmese born bombshell who shook Indian cinema with her beautiful dancing skills and bold outfits. She is married to Bollywood’s veteran producer-writer Salim Khan. She has performed iconic songs like, ‘Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu’, ‘Piya Tu Ab To Aaja’, ‘Aa Jaane Jaan’ etc.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Hailed as one of the most beautiful women in the world and titled Miss world 1994, she is known for her beauty and dancing skills. She has performed in many songs and trained in classical dance.
Deepika Padukone– One of the highest paid Bollywood actresses on-screen right now is also a graceful dancer. She has recently been featured on the Time’s 100 Most Influential People List of 2018. She has also been trained in classical dance and performed in Bollywood to popular songs like ‘Balam Pichkari’, ‘Deewani Mastani’, ‘Pinga’ etc.
These actresses have are not only great actresses but also have iconic dancing skills. Bollywood is incomplete without its song and dance routines. Therefore on this day that celebrates this art form, ‘ Dance like no one’s watching’.
