Kalki Koechlin is one of the few actresses who focus on doing films that have a message, and that mean something. However, in her new film where she stars opposite Richa Chadha titled Jia Aur Jia, all her artistic nobility takes a steep downfall as the film’s premise fails to save it’s catastrophic execution. The film. The story follows two starkly different women that share the same name. Together, they embark on a life-changing journey heading towards the same fate. Here’s hoping it doesn’t turn out to be career changing for the two actresses.

The Hindu: Inane and more inane
We have often moaned and groaned about the severe lack of good “female bonding” films in India. Along comes Jia Aur Jia that makes you wish you hadn’t grumbled about the deficiency — better nothing than this. In what would, perhaps, be the most inane film out this year, the script is more immature than a kindergarten school exercise. There is dullness and daftness written all over. The characters, situations, relationships — absolutely nothing works.

A flat and boring film about girl bonding, the Kalki Koechlin, Richa Chaddha film evokes no emotion other than frustration of having to bear it for 90 minutes. The worst thing about the unbelievably juvenile Jia Aur Jia is that it beams out, repeatedly, an inaccurate and potentially damaging message about liver donation. For the record, no one has to die to be a donor.

One Jia is quiet and broody, the other is bright and chirpy. One chokes and splutters, the other smokes and drinks. One wears six inch stilletoes and flouncy chiffons, the other short shorts and cool singlets. On a rugged road trip. A random relationship, involving pretty pink gowns and bewildered priests and marriage vows, crops up. There’s also a thread about death and dying, which leads to teary interludes, but we’ve long stopped trying to make sense of it all.

Most road trip movies make you feel bad about your boring and ordinary existence. They are ugly reminders of what you’ve been missing all this while and how life passes you by while you are busy paying bills and compromising on your likes, dislikes, even self esteem to be able to make a living. Jia Aur Jia, a female road trip movie, sadly has a reverse effect on you. It so random and badly made that no matter how mundane and unadventurous your life may be, you will still feel good about it.

Chick flick, road trip drama, slice of life, ‘Jia Aur Jia’ is anything but any of these. With the most misleading trailer ever, this film has nothing much to offer. Director Howard Rosemeyer takes you on a bad trip of marijuana for no reason. With stock shots, grainy scenes, tacky makeup and awful dialogues, ‘Jia Aur Jia’ is an absolute yawn fest.
