Kajol is perhaps one of the most successful actresses of Bollywood. During the 90s, she was the reigning queen of the film industry thanks to her superb performances in movies like Gupt, Dushman, Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge to name a few, before tying the knot with Ajay Devgn in 1999. Most of her hits are with Bollywood’s King of Romance, Shah Rukh Khan. Together they have created magic on screen with their palpable chemistry. As the actress turns a year older today (August 5), we bring to you a list of five of her best movies, that prove why she is considered one of the most versatile actresses of her generation.
Gupt :The Hidden Truth (1997)
This certainly accounts as one of the best films to have come out of Bollywood. Kajol’s disclosure as the murderer in the end is what made the movie what it is today. Her impact as the antagonist in the film was so impressive that everyone was left stunned when they walked out of the theatre. No wonder that she bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in a Negative Role for this movie.
Dushman (1998)
This movie had Kajol play a double role, essaying the character of twin sisters both intrinsically different from the other. The film has one of the sisters being brutally raped and murdered, and the other seeking revenge from the culprit. To say that Kajol was brilliant in both the roles would be a trivialization. She was impeccable in her performance bringing about the stark difference in the personalities of both the sisters, and then finally the trepidation and the helplessness of the sister who has lost her sibling to a tragic incident. Although an underrated crime thriller, Tanuja Chandra’s Dushman is certainly one of Kajol’s best movies.
Baazigar (1993)
Although this was an out and out Shah Rukh Khan movie, thanks to the negative character he played in it, Kajol’s portrayal as a girl pursuing her sister’s killer is unquestionably promising. This was also the first time we saw the epic SRK-Kajol pair on screen.
Ishq (1997)
This movie got us to see the humorous side of Kajol. This was her first major hit with then-boyfriend and now-husband Ajay Devgn. While the first half of the movie was funny, the second half was melodramatic. Despite the drastic change in gears, Kajol did justice to both the roles .
Fanaa (2006)
This marked Kajol’s comeback into films after a gap of 5 years. Fanaa is a story of a blind girl (Kajol) who falls in love with a tourist guide (Aamir Khan) who is actually an undercover terrorist. Although they were seen in Ishq together, they essayed the role of siblings in the movie. Thus Fanaa was the first movie in which they were paired opposite each other. The movie was a hit and fetched her the Best Actress Award.
The actress will be seen essaying the role of an antagonist in Velaiilla Pattadhari 2 (VIP2) alongside Dhanush that’s all set to hit screens on August 11. The movie will have a tri-lingual release–Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. We will be looking forward to seeing this talented and beautiful Bollywood actress surprise us with her performance in the movie.
