Kriti Sanon has broken her silence on the criticism surrounding her role in the film Tere Ishk Mein. A significant portion of viewers, estimated at thousands online, have expressed strong opinions about her character, Mukti, with many labeling her actions as “toxic” or associating her storyline with negative relationship behaviours. The online responses sparked widespread discussion, prompting Sanon to clarify her perspective.
Speaking to Zoom, Kriti Sanon explained that terms like “toxic” and “red flag” have become common in conversations about films and characters. She said, “’Toxic’ and ‘red flag’ – these terms have become very common now. It is great that it is being discussed. Debate is a great part of it. At the end, a lot of people are feeling like both are right and wrong at some points.”
Sanon emphasised that human actions are complex and cannot always be judged in black and white terms. She added, “Your moral compass is not towards one person, which is great because human beings make mistakes. If your heart is not wrong or you’re not an evil person, and you made a mistake, there’s always a reason why you did what you did. It is a perspective.” Her comments highlight the nuanced approach she took in portraying Mukti, portraying her as a multi-dimensional character rather than a simple villain or hero.
Mukti’s character in Tere Ishk Mein has been designed to reflect real-life complexities in relationships. The film presents her actions and choices in ways that some viewers find relatable, while others see them as problematic. Kriti’s intention, as she explained, was to create a realistic portrayal of human behaviour, where mistakes, emotions, and intentions coexist. The film has received over 1 million online discussions across social media platforms regarding Mukti’s behaviour alone.
Tere Ishk Mein follows Mukti’s journey through love, relationships, and personal growth, blending romance and drama. Released on November 28, 2025, and directed by Aanand L. Rai, the film stars Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. It opened strongly, collecting approximately Rs 51.75 crore net in India during its opening weekend, and went on to cross the Rs 100 crore mark domestically. As of December 14, 2025, the romantic drama has garnered around Rs 145.90 crore worldwide, becoming Dhanush’s highest-grossing Hindi film to date.
