In the history of Bollywood, several superhit films have graced the big screen, not just for days or months, but for years. These movies earned huge profits and turned their lead actors into superstars. One such film, released during World War II, captivated audiences and became the first blockbuster in Indian cinema history.

The film in question was made on an unexpectedly small budget, but when it hit the screens, its intriguing storyline captured the minds and hearts of the audience, leading to massive collections. This film was Kismet, released in 1943, featuring the legendary Ashok Kumar in the lead role. Following its huge success, Ashok Kumar became Bollywood’s first superstar. He starred opposite Mumtaz in this film.

Kismet’s Rs 2 Lakh Budget

You will be amazed to know that the budget for Kismet was only ₹2 lakh. The movie was completed on such a modest budget, but its unexpected box office collection left everyone stunned. According to various media reports, Kismet went on to collect ₹1 crore. Even more astonishingly, Kismet remained in theaters for three years.

The storyline of the film was highly unconventional for that era. It revolved around a girl who became pregnant before marriage, a bold theme for the time. Additionally, the patriotic song “Door Hato Duniya Walon, Hindustan Hamara Hai” gained immense popularity. The film’s success was so remarkable that it was later remade in Tamil and Telugu. The movie went on to break all records and became a massive hit among audiences.

Despite facing criticism due to its bold subject, Kismet broke box office records. Its popularity was evident from the fact that it ran for 187 weeks at Kolkata’s Roxy Cinema, a record that remained unbroken for 32 years.
