In 1970, Hindi cinema was embracing the rise of action and thriller films. The rise of Amitabh Bachchan as the Angry Young Man, along with the growing popularity of Vinod Khanna and Dharmendra, the audience enjoyed angst and violence on-screen. Yet, amid this wave, a low-budget devotional film broke all the box office records. It beat not just big blockbusters but did so without any hero, villain or action scene.
Directed by Vijay Sharma, Jai Santoshi Maa was a religious film that depicted stories of small towns and common people. Made under Rs 25 lakh, the film proved to be a sleeper hit in the history of Indian cinema. The film earned Rs 5 crore at the time, which would equate to nearly Rs 1000 crore today. Not only was it a box office sensation, but it also set a remarkable record by earning a profit of 2000%.
There were no antagonists, fight scenes or violence in the film, yet it struck a deep chord with audiences, especially in the small towns of North India. In several regions, Jai Santoshi Maa even outperformed Sholay, which was released later that year with a budget 12 times larger than that of the devotional film.
Sholay grossed Rs 15 crore during its initial run, but its profit margin was only 400%, significantly lower than that of Jai Santoshi Maa. Even modern blockbusters like Baahubali 2 (600% profit), Dangal (1000% profit), and RRR (150% profit) fall short when compared to the incredible box office success of Jai Santoshi Maa. It is the only Hindi film that has able to earn 20 times its budget in domestic earnings alone.
