Madhubala and Meena Kumari stand as the legendary icons of different eras in Indian cinema. The two were undisputed queens of the film industry, enchanting audiences with their striking beauty and impeccable acting skills. Well, what common between the two was their love stories that turned out to be heartbreaking.
Although, the two iconic actresses never appeared together in a film, but enjoyed off-screen bonding, as evident through their rare pictures on the Internet. Meena Kumari and Madhubala were considered best of friends, but one particular time period completely ruined their friendship. The duo became enemies after falling in love for the same man.
For the unversed, back in around 1949, Madhubala was rumoured to be in a relationship with Meena Kumari’s husband, Kamal Amrohi. Moreover, she forced Kamal to marry her, despite knowing that he was already married to Meena. Madhubala wanted him to divorce Meena Kumari. When, she got to know about her husband’s alleged relationship, there were reports that Meena wanted to beat Madhubala with slippers and even slap her.
Meena Kumari had a troublesome marriage with husband Kamal Amrohi. After a traumatic childhood, even her love life was quite rough. She fell in love with Kamal despite the fact he was married. But the relationship turned out to be quite awful for Meena Kumari, as she suffered domestic abuse, unfaithfulness and loneliness. After she ended her marriage with Kamal, she drowned in alcoholism, and passed away at the age of 39, due to liver cirrhosis.
Madhubala’s marital life was also not bed full of roses. She tied the knot with Kishore Kumar in 1960, but their marriage was never accepted by Madhubala’s father, despite him being converted to Islam and had changed his name to Karim Abdul. According to Madhubala’s sister Madhu, Kishore Kumar left the actress, when he got to know about her illness, stating that he can’t take care or her. She had a hole in her heart and had only two years to survive. Madhubala took her last breath on February 23, 1969.
